How Can I Book an IELTS Test?
Step-by-step guide to registering for your IELTS General Training test at an official test centre.
Step 1: Choose Your Test Type
Decide whether you need IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. For immigration, work experience, or training programs, you'll typically need General Training. For university admission, you'll need Academic. If you're unsure, check with the organisation you're applying to.
Step 2: Find a Test Centre
IELTS is available at over 1,600 test centres in more than 140 countries. Visit the official IELTS website to find the nearest test centre. You can choose between paper-based and computer-delivered tests, depending on availability at your location.
Step 3: Register Online
Create an account on the test centre's website, select your preferred test date, and complete the registration form. You'll need a valid passport or national ID. Upload a recent passport-style photograph and pay the test fee, which varies by country (typically between $200–$260 USD).
Step 4: Prepare & Attend
After booking, you'll receive a confirmation email with your test date, time, and venue details. Make sure to bring your valid ID on test day. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. No electronic devices are allowed in the test room.
Key Tips
- Book at least 2–4 weeks in advance as popular dates fill up quickly
- You can reschedule or cancel up to 5 weeks before the test date
- Computer-delivered test results are available 3–5 days after the test
- Some centres offer special accommodations for candidates with disabilities
