IELTS on Paper

Learn about the traditional paper-based IELTS test format, what to expect, and how to prepare.

What is Paper-Based IELTS?

The paper-based IELTS test is the traditional format where you answer questions using a pen or pencil on printed answer sheets. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed in one sitting, and the Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner.

Test Day Experience

You will receive a question booklet and an answer sheet for each section. For Listening and Reading, you transfer your answers to the answer sheet. For Writing, you write your responses directly on the answer sheet. All writing must be done in pen or pencil. You cannot use correction fluid.

Advantages

Many candidates prefer paper-based IELTS because they find it more natural to read from printed material. You can underline, circle, and make notes directly on the question booklet. The handwriting format for Writing is what many candidates are accustomed to from school exams.

Results Timeline

Paper-based IELTS results are typically available 13 calendar days after the test date. You can view your results online through the test centre's website. A printed Test Report Form (TRF) is usually sent to you and up to 5 organisations of your choice.

Key Tips

  • Practice writing by hand to maintain speed and legibility
  • You have 10 extra minutes to transfer Listening answers to the answer sheet
  • Bring your ID, pencils, and an eraser — nothing else is allowed
  • Results take 13 days for paper-based vs. 3–5 days for computer-based
