IELTS Listening Practice
Master the IELTS Listening test with targeted practice, tips, and full-length mock tests.
Test Structure
The IELTS Listening test lasts approximately 30 minutes and consists of 4 sections with 10 questions each (40 questions total). You hear the recording only once. Section 1 is a conversation between two people in a social context. Section 2 is a monologue in a social context. Section 3 is a conversation in an educational context. Section 4 is an academic monologue.
Question Types
You'll encounter various question types: multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, and sentence completion. Each section gets progressively more difficult, so managing your concentration throughout is key.
Essential Strategies
Read the questions before the audio starts — this is your preview time and it's crucial. Listen for keywords and synonyms. Pay attention to signpost words like 'however', 'but', 'firstly'. Write your answers as you listen. Check spelling carefully — spelling errors count as wrong answers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't leave any answer blank — there's no penalty for wrong answers. Don't write more words than the instruction says (e.g., 'no more than two words'). Don't panic if you miss an answer — move on to the next question. Don't forget to transfer your answers if taking the paper-based test.
Key Tips
- Practice with British, Australian, American, and Canadian accents
- Improve your note-taking skills for Section 4 (academic monologue)
- Use the 10-minute transfer time wisely in paper-based tests
- Listen to English podcasts, news, and lectures daily
